IDEAS FOR GENETIC PROGRAMMING (last updated July 2nd)

Genetic programming is a way of automatically generating computer programs, using evolution as a guide.

While it is has proven to be successful in limited cases, it is still too slow.  And it must be improved drastically if we are to see impressive results within the next several years.

What follows is my suggestions on how to do this. I plan to implement and test these suggestions myself within the next year or so, but I am a very slow programmer and am looking for someone to collaborate with me. Email (scroll down) or leave comments if this interests you.

Update - 1/3/: I am very unhappy with the current state of the site. The writing is too "cheerful" and unscientific. Really the only good thing is the video. I am going to redo the entire site, but it may take some time.

1. META - GENETIC PROGRAMMING



Summary: Create a genetic programming system using genetic programming itself.

Genetic programming has been presented as a way to automatically write computer programs. So naturally, what is the first thing you will do upon getting into the field of genetic programming? Why, manually write a computer program of course! You must write a genetic programming system that allows you to evolve computer programs.

You then go on to use your genetic programming system for many years, evolving computer programs, and living happily ever after - completely overlooking the fact that your genetic programming system is itself a computer program. And that you should use it to evolve a better version of itself.

2. MARKET THE IDEA

Summary: Get as many people working on genetic programming as possible.

About a year ago I began work on my first genetic programming system. At that point, I didn't even know that the field of genetic programming existed. Instead of working at the forefront of the field from the start, I wasted time reinventing the wheel, thinking up ideas that had already been done before by other genetic programming researchers. And I only started doing that a short time ago. Would I have started five or ten years ago had I known about the very fascinating topic of programming computers with evolution? Quite possibly. I know there are others like me, and I want to reach out to them.

I will elaborate on this more at a later date, but the bottom line is that we need to start a marketing campaign. Not a grassroots, not a word of mouth. A full fledged, heavily funded commercial-style campaign, which uses the human competitive results achieved by John Koza and others to grab the public's attention.

Currently the field is getting stale; too many of its researchers think alike. We need some fresh ideas, some outside perspectives. And I believe a well-executed marketing campaign is the perfect way to do that.

Well not exactly Genetic programming, and I may not be an expert in the field of travel, but I still can tell bargains when I see them. I wanted to go all inclusive to the Red Sea in Egypt and I was getting all sorts of crazy prices until I found this site.
